Advice Required - What to do?

Post by Johnny »

Warwick is a well-established university with a strong reputation in maths and related areas. Loughborough is known for sports. The sport in this case seems to be jumping on the bandwagon by putting together a crappy fin math course. So I say, pick Warwick, phuck Loughborough.

Ohhhh ... phk = phuck. I guess I am showing my noobish qualities here.

Well, thank you very much for your help guys. You have confirmed my inital thoughts of picking a very well regarded university, than a uni which is just following the trend of other universities.

I look forward to gaining more insight to the world of quanitative finance through NP... :)

Ok. I guess you need to do a little investigation before asking this type of question.

The courses at Warwick (both the Mathematics BSc and Financial Mathematics MSc which I studied) are generally well regarded (although the Oxbridge stamp of approval can make life easier!).

The undergraduate Mathematics course is very flexible and you can study any course provided by the university as long as you have passed the prerequisites. (One of my coursemates did the minimum Mathematics (50%) and as much English Lit as possible (50%) but still got a Mathematics BSc).

The Financial Mathematics course is again fairly strong and should stand stead. But just doing this will not guarantee you a job! You need to actaully be interested in what you are doing, not just in it for the power ;)

Thanks for your reply thefoolishfour.

However, please take into consideration I am not doing Maths at Warwick, but Computer Science and Business. It is out of Computer Science and Business at Warwick or Financial Mathematics at Loughborough University (or Actuarial Science at Cass, but no one seems to favour that one).

It's the classic case of, shall I go to a good school and pick Computer Science and Business at Warwick, or shall I do the most 'suitable' course that is Financial Mathematics at Loughborough? Bearing this in mind, would you, or anyone else, like to offer their opinion? :)

if your A levels are good enough (or you want to chance clearing) you should be able to find a good uni where you can do hard maths / engineering / physics course, which are required if you want to be any sort of quant. of course if your a levels arent good enough to get into a top 10 uni you probably won't pass quant interviews anyhow.

if you want to be a trader it is more about personality and mental attitude than pure maths skills, although again a good uni will help.

otherwise i would echo Johnny's recommendation. you can always do an MSc topup later if you need to (although it may require some maths cramming first !)

Warwick is currently ranked No. 6 in The Times' University Rankings and having it's name on your CV will open many doors for you. It really is a no-brainer.

You can always be slightly unscrupulous ;)

Go to a better university with an undersubscibed course and then change courses once there Evil Grin

Loughborough is actually ranked quite highly but it isn't in the top ten and that makes a *huge* difference.
