idrank, sorry to hear that. The same happened to me. The interviews were really good, got along with the boss (during a lavish lunch), was going to get an offer b/c they really wanted me on board. Two weeks later, which I thought was enough time to prepare an offer, I called them and they dished up some story about the bank's HR dept. Although I felt like saying FU, I didn't, b/c imo one thing to remember is that we're working in a really small world. It's not a good thing to have rep. following you around imho.

idrank, sure it is the due to the 'powers that be' and you don't want to appear annoyed
but remember that while shit happens, it is also true that some people, and teams, don't have a ball sack. and those sackless fwads show it in the way they communicate a rescinded offer.
if they aren't themselves pissed off and embarrassed then you should take that into account when you have the chance to work with them in the future.

Duly noted. The head of the group had called me personally to notify me and indeed expressed feelings of regret, disappointment, etc., as did I. I informed him that if the hiring freeze were lifted in the near future, I would still be interested. So I left it on a positive note. I do hope that I can work in that group, but I need to look for other opportunities in the meantime. I'll touch base with him again when I feel it is appropriate.
