I'll second emacs + auctex combination (and other latex goodies that come with emacs).

I used lyx once (!) a long time ago (!!). It was a major PITA...

IDE for LaTeX ?
I agree with Graeme re WinEdt, it is excellent. I also like TeXnicCenter. I have used both recently and have had no issues whatsoever under a M$ environment.
I have played around with Texmaker under Linux and although it's usable it's no WinEdt.

IDE for LaTeX ?
Hey pj,
since "easy" seems to be as important as it was/is to me I also recommend TexnicCenter. Feels very "MS word like" (editor wise) and is super easy to learn, use and is IMHO in wide use and well maintained. Have a look at it. I use it even for documents you should use word for:)....
