Which MSc Applied Statistics options?

Post by conjectures »

Hello

I'm just finishing up an economics conversion course and have got a place on MSc Applied Statistics at Birkbeck. I intend to take a doctorate in something related to statistical learning afterwards.

Do people think the Stochastic Modelling or Operational Research pathway looks more relevant to future work in a role in HFT?

Much appreciated

The stochastic modelling courses are more relevant to derivatives pricing than HFT.
it's axiomatic, deal with it.

Cheers for the reply Jungle. Could I infer that Operational Research would be more relevant?

The course look worthwhile overall?

Yes, stats or stats/OR look more relevant than stochastic modelling.

It seems like choosing the MSc in stats lets you take all the courses for the MSc in stats/OR, or am I missing something?

Whatever you choose, make sure you keep improving your coding skills while studying.

Thanks again - you're not missing anything on the content, but the choice changes the qualification title, so there's a PR dimension to consider as well. Plus I fancy the module on Bayesian methods.

You're right about the coding too, that's something I'm planning to handle independently. Can write python - but need to extend my c++ knowledge though.
