Yesterday's afternoon call to Nathan had not gone well. Robert was used to playing the fool with Nathan, but he was getting a little tired of the embarrassingly bad submarine officer impersonations. He glanced out the window of his fifth floor office in Mayfair, it had been a beautiful morning in London, and looked as though the afternoon would be even better. If the guys in the car park finished cleaning the Bentley by 3.00 pm Robert could be on the golf course for his usual 4.40 tee.
Time to get back to work, and the toughest decision of the day. Lunch was always a major debate in the office and The Ivy or Gordon Ramsay’s had tended to dominate the last few weeks. Gordon had become a close friend over the last couple of years, and was always understanding of some his clients more outlandish tastes. In return he was more than happy to send a tasty platter over to the boys at the office a couple of days a week. More often than not he was available for the 4.40 tee time and the two enjoyed their speed race to the course before the 5pm rush hour.
Something told Robert today would be busy though as Nathan’s trading seemed to be getting more and more uncontrollable. If today was going to be like the last few then there would be work to be done, so he decided to keep lunch simple, a delivery from Nobu was definitely the right call. The lunchtime figures were out, and even though he didn’t know what the relevance of them was he thought a couple of well placed and dumb sounding calls might conjure up some interests.
Robert glanced at his Bloomberg, the market didn’t appear to have moved too much from the US open, although his delayed feed wouldn’t respond for another fifteen minutes. The rumours of Nathan’s outsized position were all over the market and Robert knew he had to strike before the rest of the sharks moved in for the feeding frenzy. He called out to Ingrid for a coffee, increasing her pay after the modelling agency had tried to poach her put a few thou on his overheads - still, a small trade should sort that. He placed his right hand on the handset, took a deep breath, and with his left hand he pressed the button labelled "Warren Muppet"... In New York "Moron" flashed, a voice answered "Weapons Bay"...

"Line one Rob, it's Nathan Corwin" Ingrid said.
"Nathan Corwin..." Robert thought to himself, a puzzled look on his face "I'm sorry babe, Nathan.. Who?"
"C'mon Rob, it's Warren Puppet or whatever you call him. It's the fourth time he calls today".
"Alright, got it. I'll take him". "Hey Nathan, how you doing? No, we didn't... Just... I mean... If you..."
An incomprehensible rant was coming out of the phone. Robert tried to focus but as soon as Nathan mentioned volga and vamma, he couldn't help but start thinking about Olga and Hannah, two beautiful Russian models he slept with the previous night - those soft lips, those warm breasts, those.. "...and you know how much it's fucking costing me???..." two grand well spent in Aura last night, worth ever penny... and what's a two grand bill anyway, you live only once "...the biggest fucking short on the street..." and the shorter of the two, wasn't she Olga?, damn she was wild "...and those fucking Nasdaq minis..." and those martinis, Salvatore at Lanesborough knows how to fix a martini that's for sure ...
A flashing light in the corner of his eye snapped his attention. On the button was the label "ACME " and Robert knew instantly it was time to get down to business. Quickly he picked up his other handset, simultaneously putting Nathan on the speaker box.
“David, good morning” Robert ventured, he was addressing David Morris, CEO of the ACME fund. Just over 9 billion dollars under management and the amount of money he had spent nurturing this line demanded nothing less than Robert’s full attention. Robert calmly lowered the volume on the speaker box – Nathan’s irrational ranting in the background would not present a favourable impression. The conversation with David yielded a large selling interest in one year ATM puts on the SX5E and a chance to impress, and Robert knew just the guy. A button press switched Nathan from the box to the handset “...do you know how much fucking gamma that is? I've got twenty brokers on my fucking board...”
“ Alright alright. Listen Warren .. ”.
“Warren? Who the fuck is Warren?”, Nathan’s pitch now reaching a level normally reserved for the hearing of dogs.
“ Err, sorry I meant Nathan, I was talking to the other line. Listen, something quite interesting has come up.”
“I very much doubt that anything you fucking say could be of any fucking interest to me, and another thing .. wait a minute”. Nathan had placed his hand over the phone, a better strategy would have been to use his mute button. “Hey TT... Sorry, I meant Tiffany....no, ok I apologise... well I happen to have a reservation for two at Alto, you know I booked it two months ago and... what sorry? Really? Dog training classes? On a friday? Oh... Sounds cool... No no, no problem, it was short notice I understand, maybe next week ... Or if you need company at the dog classes just let me know..."
“Ok, I’m back, now what the fuck are you waffling about?”
Robert wrote “1yr ATM Puts SX5E” on a post it and passed it to Ingrid and casually remarked "Tiffany? That's a nice name..."
"Uh? What? Fuck Tiffany, mind your own fucking business. So,what you got?"
Nathan listened as Robert began to paint the picture that he hoped would deliver him his prize. A glance to his left revealed that Ingrid had obtained the price from the market maker and he made a mental note of it. The enthused panic in Nathan’s tone told Robert all he needed to know, if he could just reel him in a little more he’d be in business. The time was right, he showed the price to Nathan. “Wow NattyBoy, you are short” Robert thought as Nathan showed his bid – a bid that was already way above the level that David Morris would have been happy to let go.
