IMHO Statisticians are not poorly paid, as for being treated shitty there is always a choice you have.

"finance" and people who work in it boil down to:

matching savings

with borrowings

for a price.

working in "finance" = "making donuts" = "here, I have structured Mr. and Mrs. Smith's Mortgage, it pays off in 30 years, has a X% interest rate.

working in "finance" = "selling donuts" = "come on in folks, we got some great deals on mortgages today!"

but frankly, if you can't get that metaphor, and don't know about firms like Trimark Financial, Wall Financial and Banyan Capital Partners, as well as the myriad of Vancouver's mineral exploration firms (yes, that is finance, they *raise* capital to go *explore* for something valuable and they hope to get a positive *return* and they are taking *risk* which they often *hedge*) then there is no helping you.

hit number 4 in google when you search "sfu finance" is the link to the SFU Finance Club, perhaps meeting them would get you going in the right direction.

and as Bachelier said, there is a huge finance business in Vancouver. A number of mutual funds and brokerage houses are out there, and most of the big canadian banks have trading floors and ib offices.

as for the parents, it made me think of the line from Boiler Room "Parents don't like the life you lead? Ph*ck you, Mom and Dad. See how it feels when you're makin' their ph*ckin Lexus payments"

yea im in that club, working with the execs.

honestly, its been useless.

i have started a new investment club in our school. finally, i am surrounded with the same ppl who are passionate about investing and trading. its gonna be a blast.

You've answered your own questions, haven't you? Obviously science isn't for you. You'll never succeed at it. Stick to what you are interested in and you'll be a roaring success. People who are good at what they do and like doing it always find jobs. Listen to your parents politely, then do what you really want to do.
