There are a few variables here:

Where are you getting your PhD? Are we talking University of Idaho or Princeton?

What exactly are you looking to do and how much do you know about finance and capital markets?

You don't 'need' to go through a recruiter, but if you can find one willing to help you, it certainly won't hurt. (It's more difficult for a HH to place an entry-level candidate because you are an unknown quantity. You might be very smart - but, there are lots of very smart guys who don't make the cut. Also, because you're entry-level, the fees generated to place you tend not to always be worth the effort on the HH's part.)

Feel free to shoot me a copy of your resume and I'll give you my opinion. If things look good and I think you have a shot, I can possibly represent you to a couple of my clients.

I am getting a PhD from Georgia Tech and have bachelors from IIT Bombay, India. I have some background in applying PDEs to computer vision problems and my base is in signal/image processing. In Finance I have studied Baxter and Rennie and I have elementary C++ knowledge( I was using C and MATLAB until now though I had done a C++ course in undergrad). However I am working on my C++ right now.

Also I will be sitting through the course covering Shreve-2 in Fall. What are your suggestions? I am interested in Quantitative Analyst/Researcher or Risk Analytics/Quantitative Risk positions if I cannot get Quantitative Trading position.

Has anyone heard of Seymour Search Partners? They called me up on a number I don't hand out to a lot of people. Me thinks they sound a bit Huxley-like, mentioning a 10bn HF wanting to set up an office almost on my doorstep. Any info?

Seymour Search Partners is a firm to avoid. Really looks like a cover name for another big firm.

- They call you out of the blue with the perfect job

- Won't tell you anything about it unless you send cv accross

- They desappear when they have your cv.

Basically a bunch of #~*$*

I'd sugget to read the reply of Clopinette. That's bascially huxley. I'd add to that: even if they don't have your cv they'll make it up for you.

I had to threaten them with legal action once. "inadvertently" I had ended up in their cv database. Never had anything to do with them.

The Huxley rep can be used to your own benefit though. From time to time (in hindsight) serious HHs call me up, I tell them I don't give out my cv without furhter details about the position, they are more easily persuaded into handing out details. Then again most serious HH will always give you info that is more substantial than the flashy stories e.g Huxley tends to give you
