IDE for LaTeX ?

I use Eclipse for all my development, and so TeXlipse (http://texlipse.sourceforge.net/) works quite nicely. Most of my LaTeX is done with Sweave so I embed all my code. And there's a nice Eclipse plugin which covers both R and LaTeX (http://www.walware.de/goto/statet). Not sure that I would suggest it unless you're already using Eclipse.

i join the others recommending WinEdt

it's by far the best IDE for LaTeX / pdf / ps generation for windows. it's not free though but costs like $30 bucks.

On Windows, I've been using TeXnic Center for years after using Winedt, and found that it covered all the requirements you listed. It is not only free, but also highly customisable.

so basically there are four options

1) WinEdt (30$)

2) TeXnicCenter (free)

3) Emacs + AUCTeX (free)

4) TeXShell (alas, not active)

jsl1 compares TeXnicCenter favourably with WinEdt.

(And I don't like emacs layout,

which can be changed)

I used TechnicCentre and then switched to WinEdit - good decision.
