tradenator: why would short positions not be allowed? the premise is the sharing of profit or loss, so in theory yo ucould paraphrase as such?

My naiive quick answer is that usury isn't kosher, and the borrowing leg of short selling puts you at risk there. I think there is also a requirement to own the assets at some point, depending on the interpretation.
