regarding your note on kernel compilation, i found it quite easy with linux : you have a nice GUI configuration choose & click to select your options.



regarding mutt, following your dependency list, i checked on debian package site an i found, in the list it returned :



exim4

An MTA (Mail Transport Agent)

or mail-transport-agent

Virtual package



so it seems that they solved my previous remark by adding a "virtual package" MTA, so if you install Postfix, i guess it says "there's already a MTA, so don't install exim"
