hi all, long time lurker.



I'm also interested in what you guys think of this book. I assume this book is aimed at someone like myself, lurks around here but doesn't post because they have absolutely nothing to add nor has the math to get very far with the core text of this field.



My biggest queston is if the concept of the book is a good one or not. Will the tools presented give me a slight edge vs using nothing at all in this manner or will the tools presented crack the door open just enough to be extremely dangerous to myself/money?



Also, from the table of contents it would seem most the book is a tutorial on R. Is this a good primer? The book might be worth it to me even if just to have a nice intro to R as a hard copy.

Bought it, skimmed it, read some stuff.  IMHO, the first 120 pages is somewhat good (oh yeah, that's the only stuff on portfolio modeling) and the remaining pages (over 100) is devoted to downloading free R manuals and photocopying into this book.



Save your time and money.  Buy and read Kolm's books.

i have been meaning to write a longer review of this but strapped for time. I agree with techno like the first few pages but the last 150pages is an R manual available on the web. However I have to say that this book is a great service to R, i think as it will reach an audience that has not heard about it or used it before. I think a few people would buy this based on the comments by Bolilnger on the back cover. Not a bad book for the technicians and systems traders but the average NP member can safely pass this and not miss much.

The table of contents for this book gave me high hopes, but I was pretty disappointed with the book. This book is very basic stuff. I agree that most members of NP should probably pass.

I was literally getting my credit card to buy it, thx, glad I didn't. What book on Portfolio Modeling would you recommend as a starter book for rookie punx then?
