Functional programming opportunities in New York and Boston?

I left finance 4 years ago and moved through a few startups, and I think I'm ready to get back into finance. I'm agnostic about the specific industry (and would certainly take compelling non-financial opportunities) but finance has hard machine-learning and "big data" problems to which the functional approach is most effective.



I want to keep using functional languages like Scala, Clojure, and Haskell.



I'm looking around for these sorts of opportunities, and they seem to be thin on the ground. Mostly it's Java and C++, which is not the direction I want to take, technically speaking.



Are there any recruiters who could help me find these sorts of opportunities? I'm most interested in the New York and Boston markets.

I believe there's a Meetup group for NY functional programmers, so that may be worth looking up to find some people to talk to. Don't know how active they've been recently, but I believe they occasionally have talks at Credit Suisse (which does a lot of work in F#).

Your best bet is to find a q programming job. While not as pure as say haskell, q is a functional language and is definitely used more than clojure/scala/haskell. Typically such roles will also involve programming in R/python, so you might be able to do 90% of your programming in functional style.

Jane St Capital is -just- OCaml.



Credit Suisse is Haskell, I think, possibly F# now.



Standard Chartered is Haskell from what I hear.



Goldman used Erlang but not in a trading role, just to manage and supervise the trading systems and possibly market data adapters.
