It's a while since I read it
But I think Hull would be better : or Joshi possibly if they were quite mathematical.

The "Option Trading" book is a good introduction in my opinion (Link). I'm not sure if you are refering to this book or "Volatility Trading".

Yep both books ... if the intern is a total neophyte filthy's second book should be first

I just read this stuff out of interest, and approached it with very little knowledge of finance. I found Joshi's intro book very enjoyable (moreso than Hull).

in fairness to filthy, I thought his first book was very good, just maybe not the best intro. I wasn't aware that he had written a second; looking at the amazon reviews it seems worth adding to any options-trading reading list, there are not many alternatives (natenberg, often suggested, now seems extremely dated, and rebonato/taleb are not really beginner books).

i might be a little biased here...
i think hull and joshi wrote books that everyone should read and recommended both in "volatility trading 2nd ed" (mark's books were written after the first edition came out) but i don't really think either book teaches trading.
i think (humbly?) that "option trading" is the best first book for an aspiring trader to read.

Hi,
I am no trader, but I have worked in shops that should have read both books written by filthy Evil Grin . These are IMO the only books that describes trading as what it is or should be: a business process!
Hence I reccomend this book to people who don't even trade with derivatives!
Joshi and Takov/Cont are IMO the best books on pricing. But on trading I don't know any reasonable book other than the ones by filty (esspecially Volatility Trading). Happy to listen to further recommendations though.

Ach give the guys the JPM primer on Variance Swaps, the Exotic Options Trading by de Weert and Corporate Equity Derivatives and Equity Capital Markets by Ramirez.
Once you read this, give them this, which is really good practical book:

filthy's option trading
market wizards
dynamic hedging
filthy's volatility trading
