I was interested in what chances a startup trying to apply ml to l/s strategies would have.

Your question cannot honestly be answered as is, of course, and the L/S strategies part is a red herring. I hope you took note of this line in the article:



"Machine learning algos, no matter how advanced, cannot and will not find gold where there is none. Machine leaning can identify the best way of collecting the gold at the lowest possible risk provided that the gold is there in the first place."



If your startup cannot make money with a L/S strategy (or any other strategy), ML will make no difference.
