Hi All,

Could someone shed light on what would be the average salary leves in Amsterdam? I know the place is quite expensive .

What should a person with 5-6 years of relevant experience look forward to .

Greatful if someone could shed some light on the above . Also it would be handy if someone could give some tips in terms of cost of living for an individual.

If you're going to join a bank, I would say anything above 100K euros base is very good in Amsterdam. The bonus payout ratios are largely similar to the rest of the world.

Regarding cost of living, a 3 bedroom furnished apartment overlooking the best canals would cost about 2500 euros per mth. A pint of beer costs about 5 euros, a meal at a good restaurant costs about 25 euros per person (excluding alcohol).

The real killer is the 52% tax. You should get your company to apply for the special tax status for you (called the 30% ruling) by proving that you have special skills not available in NL. With 6 years relevant exp, you have a very high chance of getting it. This will mean 30% of your compensation (including bonus) is not taxed. So the effective tax rate comes down to about 35%.

It's picture postcard stuff, living on the chic canals, but if you have money to burn then it's OK. The shops, restaurants in the area are expensive, no place to park, lots of tourists.

Chances are the flat is on the fourth floor.

You can get a decent flat for less than 2500 but in a somewhat less fashionable area (but still close to the city centre). In old West, for example.

Tax is a pain that is softened if u have a mortgage (the interest is deductible).

Thanks very much for the info , looks like the tax could rip me off . Do i need to request the employer to request a a tax exemption? How do i know that they have done it for me .

I dont want to land there and find things have gone wrong or is it done post employmet?

Regarding the cost , 2500 euro's looks too much . i am single and need just basic amenities and a strict no to alcohol .... so knowing that what could be an average cost of livingthere P/M in terms of the Rent and other living expenses?

Iam not looking at banking job but more into product based companies.

The 30 percent ruling can be requested by the employer, but you can also do it yourself. You can find more info about it here.

The 2500 mentioned by vols is definitely the upper end of the market. One can find a decent two-bedroom apartment for around 1000 euros a month. Regarding other living expenses: that of course depends a lot on your spending pattern, but for one person another 1000 a month should get you pretty far.

how old is that text gzy?

I though that it was limited to 5 years and that you could get it only for your first job in neederlands.

the 30 percent ruling is given for an initial period of 5 yrs and can be extended for another 5 yrs (the extension is only a formality if you're in the same field). It is also transferable if you move jobs if there's less than 3 months(i think) gap between jobs. However, you should have it in your first job to be eligible. Both you and your employer need to apply together(best to use an accounting firm) to get it.
