Library Thing

I can't find the OP, but I know we've talked about how to find a good filter for good books. Books that you specifically would like, rather than generic things from Amazon that say "people who shopped for this also liked..." which doesn't always work because a)it might be a gift, not for you and b) you may have bought the book, but you didn't like it.

This site allows you to enter the books you like (the first 200 entries are free) and then tells you what other people who liked those same books also liked. It also tells you which books are least correlated ("unsuggestions" I think they call it).

Anyway, I think it's cool and I'm hoping it helps me find some new books!

I've been using Librarything.com just to keep track of the books I read, but haven't been able to extract any more out of it.

Is anyone using this tool extensively for finding reading material?

Been using it for a while and was glad to find that authors keep improving it all the time. The user interface is "old-school" aka web.1.0 but I like it.

And yes - it is quite usefull for finding new reading material, because their ratings makes much more sense (at least to me) compared to those at Amazon.

Since there's not way to hide a part of whole library (as in Delicious) from others - it relatively easy to find people with the same interests and see what they are reading.

I use a similar service called GoodReads. The advantage of this thing is that it has an API and Twitter/FriendFeed integration.

Do you by any chance know - is it possible to "import" librarything.com library to

into goodreads or gnooks?

In case of large library it might be very slow to do it manually.

OK i did some fiddling with all three

librarything: suggests books, pain to add books, limit of 200 unless you pay

goodreads: easy to add books, but suggestions seem to come mainly from what your friends are reading

gnook: doesn't store anything, you just say who you like, it asks questions and then makes suggestions.
