I think the "shrimp" sceen is actually an oyster, plucked fresh from the sea by a fresh ripe oyster girl. As she opens the shell, a drop of her blood falls into the oyster (a Crassostrea Gigas). These oysters thrive in cold water, so she is subtly shivering.

Salt, iron, iodine and mineral flavors are the theme being expressed.

I think given that flavor constellation and the shivering Japanese girl, we need'nt expand too forcefully on what intimacy the sceen is alluding too.

My favorite is the sceen where the esthete is dying, and he dreams of hunting northern wild pigs in the winter, who gorge themselves on sweet potatos. He dreams of slaughetering them and immediatly grilling their entrails....."fresh yam sausages."
Okay, if I can turn a sphere inside out with smooth isotopy, how come I can't turn the manifold that is myself inside out to see why my stomach hurts?

the chinese restaurant scene in 'Existenz' does some "interesting" stuff with food... not to everyone's taste, but typical Cronenberg i think.

Yes, Bachelier, that's the one, but the same fresh ripe oyster girl is in a scene later involving a live shrimp thrashing around in a bowl held against her stomach.  It's even less subtle than the one you describe.

That other scene you described is also my favorite, what a great idea.  Is it true?  Reminds me of Jamon Iberico de Bellota, an Iberian ham from pigs that dine only on acorns and herbs.  I had some on my way to wedding this past June, it was delicious.

There's always the fresh octopus tentacle eating scene from "Oldboy"...

The only movie that makes me want to do stuff is Constantine. I always want a cigarette after that film even though I don't smoke. Maybe I am a sucker for subliminal advertising???
Well, if being smart isn't gonna help me impress the chicks, then I want no part of it.
