AI is the direction I want to take for my career in the future, but it doesn't seem that there is much demand for AI/machine learning in finance. My observation is that an extremely careful, efficient implementation of a simple idea is much more valuable than novelty.
Am I correct in my observation that there is little demand for AI/ML work in finance, or am I completely wrong? Also, what kinds of jobs (in or outside of finance) are there in AI/ML? How do they pay, and how hard are they to get? I place interesting work at a much higher priority than pay, so leaving finance is not out of the question for me.

AI jobs in finance are certainly out there on the buy side; even I have run into such places (I probably have less real world experience than you, 'n00b, and I don't live in NYC). You're probably not going to get one without a Ph.D. and experience though, unless you already have stuff which works already. I'd actually be real surprised if your firm wasn't doing some form of it, if I am guessing your firm correctly.
There is plenty of demand for machine learning outside of finance, and it's (of course) a lot easier to get the jobs. Offhand: military contractor/signal processor, credit fraud detection, video games, online ad stuff, inventory forecasting, ops research. They all pay less than phynance, and about the same (maybe less for mil or video games). Think; high end tech salary.
