Keith Richards on Led Zepplin

What's your view on the old skool guitarists? I'm thinking Duanne Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Or something like that. It was considered uncool to like Led Zepplin when I was a kid but I'm finding myself listening to their tracks once again.

The lore was that Page ripped off other guitarists. I feel like anything that you can play drunk should qualify as entertainment. The Stones recorded their most famous albums with Keith's guitars in open tunings. This was so that you didn't have to fret notes in different places to make a chord. Instead you just slide your hand up and down to run the circle of fifths, depending on what key you're in based on the open tuning (open G for Richards). You can be in a coma and still play.

once Zappa's in scope, do his proteges (satriani, vai, etc) come up for comment?

(starts inching away from both the roll and the rock)

when the map opens to that territory do we go as far as malmsteen, etc?

(btw, no particular appeal for me, credit something with visceral aesthetic impact over technical wizardry in isolation)

EDIT: Fripp, Mclaughlin, Belew, etc?

I don't associate Zappa with guitar. I associate Zappa with composition.

He released a series of albums focused on guitar virtuosity and was known as an innovator.

His playing, in particular, attracted several guitarists who became top technical players...is it Steve Vai who demonstrated his devotion by transcribing one of the guitar albums?

(They were probably also attracted to the challenging compositions)
