I'm putting this in the trash can, as I am a strict rationalist, but do any of you fellows believe in hoodoos?

I only believe on them on my days off, but it's awful weird when a man's luck turns when he cuts the cord on some toxic relationship.

It seems almost tautological that if you get out of a toxic relationship your luck will improve. No need for hoodoos. What's hoodoos anyway, voodoo from the hood?

I got the term from Niederhoffer, who means something a bit different. The tautology part is obvious: the weird and completely awesome luck immediately subsequent to the eject button being pushed is what gives me pause. Yeah, I know, synchronicity is mostly misunderstood probability theory and the birthday paradox, but I like what Gracian said:

"Select the Lucky and avoid the Unlucky.

Ill-luck is generally the penalty of folly, and there is no disease so contagious to those who share in it. Never open the door to a lesser evil, for other and greater ones invariably slink in after it. The greatest skill at cards is to know when to discard; the smallest of current trumps is worth more than the ace of trumps of the last game. "

LOL, last time I cut a toxic relationship (many moons ago) I subsequently "diversified" into several parallel ones. That all went horribly wrong too, involving one naked girl running down the street in a psychotic rage at one point. Ahhh, those were the days!

I think that's something to discuss...is that diversification or clustering?

Edit: anyway: congrats to jslade for getting his balance sheet free of toxic waste.

Feel free to share your experience via PM Big Smile . Diversification only works to a certain extent and is usually not worth the effort.

Years ago, there was a kind of dating manual for men going around, it was quite funny. It had tips like: when you get her home for the first time, make sure you get at least one drink into her before giving the tour. When the tour reaches the bedroom, linger for a while to allow her to finish her second drink there.

IMHO diversification works better as a basket trade than with the, er, um, "positions" managed separately. Cool

That was my implicit assumption Wink . I had a buddy who messed up this correlation thingy... dating two nurses working at the same hospital. Luckily he found the fire ladder in time before the flying scalpel hit him.

pfff it all started with philosophy and not easy to understand concepts ("Ill-luck is generally the penalty of folly, and there is no disease so contagious to those who share in it. Never open the door to a lesser evil, for other and greater ones invariably slink in after it. The greatest skill at cards is to know when to discard; the smallest of current trumps is worth more than the ace of trumps of the last game. ") and now we are talking about correlation in medical nurses and the danders of scalpels... @tradenator I liked your story about the girl in psychotic rage... :-) thanks for a pulling me out of some boring nitty gritty
